I am continuing with my one new thing each week resolution! This week I started juicing, and I dragged my husband with me! We discussed what our health concerns are and what we would like to improve on through juicing. Interestingly, we both have a strong desire to reduce inflammation.

In 2004, the cover of TIME Magazine read “The Secret Killer – the Surprising Link between Inflammation and Heart Attacks, Cancer, Alzheimer’s and Other Diseases.” This is an amazing article that clearly explains inflammation and its effects on the body. Highly recommend!

There are two types of inflammation – acute and chronic.

  • Acute inflammation is what we experience with injury or infection. It is a temporary reaction produced by the body.
  • Chronic inflammation can last for prolonged periods of several months or even years. Hippocrates suggested that all diseases begin with the gut. A great deal of the immune system ties into the gut. Not surprisingly, the solution for chronic inflammation revolves around improving gut health!

Next step for me was to find a good book on juicing. I found and I LOVE…. Juice Alive!!!!

Some interesting tidbits from Dr. Steven Bailey’s book:

  • One of the primary causes of chronic inflammation is an unhealthy diet.
  • You can trace every sickness, every disease, and every ailment to a mineral deficiency.
  • Think of nutrition as a rainbow…. make sure you get all the colors daily.
  • Fresh orange or lime juice with a pinch of rock salt helps to promote recovery from fatigue.
  • A daily drink of lemon juice (unsugared or with honey) loosens, thins, and eliminates mucus.
  • Chlorophyll boosts the body’s ability to transport oxygen.

My husband and I decided to start with a Juice Alive recipe for reducing Inflammation. The drink is flavorful, but intense! We are slowly easing into this by juicing every other day for the first few weeks. Here is the recipe:

  • 3 carrots, 3 celery stalks, a cucumber and 1 garlic clove into the juicer makes one 12 oz serving. We double the recipe and split it.

We drink it 30 minutes or more before our lunch. Will keep you posted with our progress.
