Facilitating Good Sleep

A new tool for me but an old and trusted one for my clients.

My healing journey began as an Occupational Therapist, where I had the privilege of working with infants and children facing challenges that didn’t neatly fit into a specific diagnosis. Many of them struggled to experience life in a normal way. Alongside various modalities, I often utilized Craniosacral Therapy to help balance their nervous systems. Weighted blankets were among the tools I employed to facilitate their navigation of the world.

Weighted blankets leverage deep touch pressure to soothe and calm the nervous system. This pressure helps reduce cortisol levels, promoting relaxation and alleviating anxiety, ultimately enhancing the quality of sleep. I also recommend weighted blankets for adults for similar reasons.

Selecting the right weighted blanket for your needs is relatively straightforward:

  1. Choose a vendor offering at least four weight options.
    • Select a weight approximately 10% of your body weight.
    • Remember, heavier isn’t necessarily better.
  2. Ensure the weighted blanket is easy to clean.
  3. Look for several size options.
  4. Confirm that the material used is suitable for your skin.

Deciding to try a weighted blanket myself, I sought to enhance my already effective sleep routine. Opting for a 15-pound blanket, I chose one made of organic cotton, meeting my criteria of being easy to clean and skin-friendly. I settled on a twin size, considering the manageability of handling 15 pounds of material.

Here’s to embarking on a new sleep adventure!
